Useful info

Tuition fees pay the costs of running a university or college, e.g. providing teachers, and maintaining the buildings and services that you will use. Also included will be lessons, lectures, seminars, access to libraries, laboratories and resources, registration and examination fees.

There may be some additional costs, depending on your course, like field trips, for example.

The cost of tuition fees may vary depending on whether you are studying at college or university and what subjects you have chosen. Some international students are eligible to pay the 'home' fee, which is lower, others will pay the 'overseas' fee. To check your eligibility for 'home' fees in relation to your nationality, immigration status and/or residence, check here.

You should contact the institution and check their website to find out what type of fee you will pay and the average costs. The International Student Fees survey may also help.

Useful info

  • Overseas fees are higher than Home fees because the UK government subsidises the fees for Home students.
  • Ask your university or college how to pay your fees. There may be a discount if you make one payment before you start rather than separate payments over the year.
  • Remember that the tuition fee will usually increase each year because of inflation.
  • The International Student Fees Survey may also help for university fees
  • When planning your budget for UK study, you should remember to include the costs of your student visa (and that of any dependants if they are joining you in the UK). For more information on student visas, visit the UKCISA website or the UKBA website.
  • If you want to apply to extend your visa (and/or that of your dependants) once you are in the UK, you will have to pay for this. More information here.
