Useful info

Students spend on average £225 per year on books and those who go on field trips spend £161 per year, according to the 2008 NUS Student Experience report.

You will get a list of required books and equipment at the start of your course. Find out what you definitely need to buy as the costs can really add up. You may be able to buy books and equipment second-hand (look on the internet or on noticeboards), share them or photocopy relevant sections from books.

Useful info

  • Look for cheap stationery in your college shop or in the shops on campus. Other shops may offer student discounts.
  • You will probably need to buy a photocopying card to do photocopying on campus or at college.
  • Get your student card as soon as you arrive, as you may need this to enter the library or computer rooms.
  • If you are asked to do coursework and you are unsure of how to structure and write essays or insert references, ask your teacher or tutor for advice.
  • If you want to fit in a part time job alongside your studies, try to get one which fits with your timetable and also helps you gain skills useful for your course or career.
