Transport

Trains

With a student card, you can buy a 16-25 Railcard which is a good investment for travelling around Great Britain. Priced at £24 for a year, it gives students a third off rail fares. You can buy online, at a station or over the phone. More info here; http://www.16-25railcard.co.uk

Remember that train tickets are often cheaper if you book in advance.

Buses

Bus fares vary depending on where you live. If you are going to use the bus regularly, it may be worth buying a buss pass. These will probably be available for a week, month or year. You'll pay more to start with but it will save you money over time and will give you unlimited travel within a certain area. Find out how late the buses run at night so you don't get stuck.

If you’re studying in London, a Student Oyster Photocard will give you 30% discount on Bus passes for a week, month or longer periods. More info here: http://www.tfl.gov.uk/tickets/faresandtickets/1014.aspx

Underground / Metro

The 'Tube' is very popular in London and some other cities. In London, a Student Oyster Photocard will give you a 30% discount on Travelcards for a week, month or longer periods up to a year. If your journey is short, check to see if it's cheaper to get the bus or walk!

Driving

Parking on campus and halls of residence can be limited. Remember to budget for car insurance, car tax and the cost of a MOT test. Adding the costs of petrol and repairs means it can be very expensive so make sure it’s a worthwhile way of spending your cash.

Coaches

National Express coaches can be cheaper than trains. Try and book in advance for cheaper tickets. Students can buy a Coachcard which offers discounts.

Taxis

'Black cabs' (black taxis) are more expensive. Ask your university or union for a reliable taxi company and keep their number safe. Ask in advance how much a journey will cost.

Flights

If you are looking to book flights, check out the budget flights and compare deals. As well as the ticket, don't forget the cost of transport to and from the airport, taxes, travel insurance and bag check in. Prices can change regularly but often the earlier you book, the cheaper the ticket.

Bike

The healthy option! Make sure you get a helmet, lights and a decent lock. You should get your bike insured as they're easy things to steal.

Walking

Free transport and good exercise! Could use valuable studying time. Carry a mobile but don't talk on it when walking, it attracts thieves. Remember, be safe. If it's late, travel with others after dark.
