Sheffield is one of the red brick universities and a frequent feature of UK Top University lists. Perhaps more importantly, it also does consistently well in student satisfaction surveys, especially for Computer Sciences, Genetics, Biochemistry and Theology.
University guides confirm our position as one of the UK's leading universities. The 2010 Virgin Guide to British Universities, for instance, says that "Sheffield is a top university across the board".
Teaching quality assessments rate our teaching very highly across a wide range of subjects, and official research assessments confirm our reputation as a centre for world-class research in many disciplines.
We have over 24,000 students from 131 countries, and almost 6,000 staff. The University of Sheffield is a popular choice with applicants for university places, and once they arrive our students enjoy the experience so much that many settle in Sheffield after they graduate.
The University is rated 82nd in the world in the 2009 Times Higher Education – QS World University Rankings. These rankings were derived using a combination of reputational surveys, staff:student ratios, the proportion of international staff and students, and research citations.
In the 2009 National Student Survey (NSS), the University has again achieved 3rd place among the Russell Group universities (after Cambridge and Glasgow) for overall satisfaction, with 89 per cent of our final year students confirming that they were satisfied.
In four subject areas, Genetics, Molecular Biology, Biophysics and Biochemistry, Computer Science, and Theology and Religious Studies, students expressed 100 per cent satisfaction. Improvements in scores were achieved in four subjects, with Asian Studies in the School of East Asian Studies achieving a 27 per cent rise in overall satisfaction. Additionally, satisfaction with learning resources has risen significantly in most faculties.
Sheffield is not a campus university: its buildings are part of the town, although most of them are quite close together a mile to the west of the city centre.
